| | Jazz in Marciac (JIM) is a major jazz festival in Marciac which has taken place in August every year since 1978 (1st to the 15). There are also smaller events in autumn, winter and spring.
Marciac, a bastide town dating from the end of the 12th century, is a village of 1200 inhabitants. It is situated mid-way between Auch and Tarbes, and a hour an a half from Toulouse.
During this fortnight in August, the town square, still with its medieval arcades, is at the centre of activities with free concerts. All around the square, numerous artisans from the region display their wares.
The concerts take place the evening under a giant marquee, known familiarly as 'the chapiteau'. Many restaurants of the village, or taverns installed for the occasion, offer meals accompanied by live music.
This festival has hosted many famous names in music, including Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, le Modern Jazz Quartet, Stéphane Grappelli, Michel Petrucciani, Eddy Louiss, Sonny Rollins, Gerry Mulligan, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Wynton Marsalis, Ray Charles, Diana Krall, Biréli Lagrène, Ibrahim Ferrer... and many other |
